This paper proposes a new IP (integral-proportional) controller as STATCOM controller, and this IP controller uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) to tune parameters.
According to ITAE performance index, thermostatic element this IP controller is compared with the traditional PI controller.
The simulation results also verify that the new IP controller has better performance than the traditional PI controller in STATCOM control. Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) generally adopts traditional PI and PID controller [1].
PI controller has the advantages of simple structure and easy implementation, but there are many problems.
For example, in the case of fast response, although PI controller makes the system no overshoot, the response to load disturbance becomes slow [2]. There are also double closed-loop PI controllers [3], but multiple PI controllers need to be designed with complex structure.
In order to meet the requirements of non-linearity, many intelligent control methods are proposed, such as particle swarm optimization PI control [4], but it is easy to fall into local extreme value, and so on.
In this paper, STATCOM internal controller (DC voltage regulator and generator voltage controller) is designed as IP controller.
The parameters of IP controller are tuned by PSO algorithm. The ability of STATCOM is demonstrated under heavy load and the IP controller designed is compared with the traditional PI controller.
The simulation results also show that STATCOM with IP controller is effective in power system stability and control.
